| | | Re: Autumn Sunrise Lovely picture, Mrs Fish. I don't often see sunrises unless I'm not in bed yet! I see lots of sunsets though.
My children used to say: Red sky at night, shepherd's delight,
Red sky in the morning, shepherd's cottage is on fire! |

And its a gorgeous picture - the past few mornings round here I can't say I've noticed any sunrises, it just gets a paler and paler grey until its actually daylight, but then again it has always been raining
And mackeral skies - I just thought that was because the clouds looked scaley, like fish skin (though I have problems remembering the name too - I keep thinking its haddock!!!)?

| | | Re: Autumn Sunrise Our version of the saying was a hybrid of the two - "Red sky at night, shepherds' delight, red sky in the morning, sailors' warning". I think the idea was that the red in the evening indicated clouds lifting so we could expect a fair day folllowing, whereas red in the morning meant clouds gathering for a possible storm. But that sounds like a bit of pretty shaky meteorology to me. |

| | | Re: Autumn Sunrise Isn't all meteorology shaky? Perhaps that's a bit unfair, but we seem to have a micro-climate that oftens runs very counter to the local three hourly forecast - usually to the good I might add.
Hope not to have offended any meteorologists!
There is an old joke about the rhyme that involves a Russian spy landing from a submarine. The punch line is "A red spy in the morning is a shepherd's warning". I can't quite remember all of the rest, except that it would not be fit for such genteel ears as subscribe to WAB.
If you can remeber the rest of the joke, you are still genteel.
