| | | Rumours about English Weather? I've heard that England is always dreary and cold and just cloudy. Is that true? Does it ever snow? |

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? No, we have some lovely warm sunny days with blue skies (at all seasons of the year!) and yes, sometimes it snows. Although don't mention that to the folks in the north of Scotland right now, especially the poor souls who have been stuck in snow on the A9 all day...
Of course, some days are grey and dull, some are cold, but we rarely have real extremes of temperature either way. On the whole I would say that England (and the rest of the British Isles - Wales, Scotland and Ireland) has a very pleasant climate and the countryside can look really beautiful on a good day at any time of the year. Have a look in the Gallery for some superb photographs in the regional landscape sections.
EDIT: By the way, where are you from? If you were in much of England today you may well have seen one of those dreary dull days! But it really is not always like that. Except possibly in Manchester!! (That's a joke, of course! )

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? I'd strongly advise against moving to the British Isles if you are looking for weather that is reliably warm and sunny. Sorry, but in my opinion (and I love the UK to bits) the weather "sucks".

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? If you like weather the UK is the place to come. None of this boring predictability you get in continental areas, always knowing what it's going to be from day to day must be really tedious. Yes it rains and sometimes snows but it produces a wonderfully green and lush landscape and those days days when the sun comes out the glorious variability of the British landscape, caused in part by a wonderfully varied underlying geology, is hard to beat. I can't imagine there are many countries of similar size that have such a varied and interesting range of landscapes and habitats. Add into that some of the marvelous historic features and archaeological sites dating back up to 7-8000 years and what a place to live.

There are a lot worse than the UK.
Maybe our weather could be better but it certainly could be lot worse.

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? I for one have thoroughly enjoyed this Winter. More snow than we've had for years! It's been fantastic for Winter walking too!
Having said that, I'm now looking forward to the Spring/Summer.....where our beautiful countryside comes to life with a blaze of colour and where the warm breeze caresses your skin. Mmmmm, heavenly........

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? It is something we have no control over but it is something the British talk about constantly and at time it is used has a means of bonding and very usefull subject for opening conversation with strangers.
Being an island the weather can be very varied and it can change very quickly and in some places at certain times of year you can experience a 'variety of seasons' in one day. So a waterproof can be useful but real 'cats and dogs' weather is quite infrequent.
We have gone/are going through the coldest winter in decades and our energy companies take great delight in charging us some of the highest prices in Europe for our use of it. So some thermal clothing may be of some use for next winter .
The island however is rich in a variety of landscapes and environments and you do not have to travel vast distances to see and experience them and on the whole we care a lot about the wildlife we share the place with.
Some of what i have written above is tongue in cheek and some of it true but it is best to find out for yourself before any real judgement is made. Hope you enjoy your stay |
