| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? Hey Eryri and Darrenm, ninjacorb asked about the weather here! For goodness' sake don't start confusing him with the differences in our two vesions of the English language! That'll be hard enough by itself, let alone when you start introducing regional dialects and local words...
Just for example... if someone from the Forest of Dean (Gloucestershire) calls you "Ol' Butt" it does not mean what an American might think - it is actually a local dialect from coal mining days and means "Old Buddy, old friend".
Just get yourself over here ninjacorb and judge for yourself!

| | | Re: Rumours about English Weather? The weather of Britain is different from West and East. A map on the TV showed a clear divide. The West side is alot wetter and as you go over the hills, the East side is drier. London and South East has a growing water shortage problem.
When I lived in London I once went a whole summer without getting my feet wet once, wearing sandals. Lovely hot summers (except one summer when it seemed to rain practically every day, except for 2 hot weeks).
I am Cornish, and everyone always told me how wonderful the Cornish weather was on their holidays. Which I found amazing as everytime I visited my parents it rained. Cornwall is that tiny peninsula at the bottom West end of Britain. The Cornish weather starts at Exeter. In London it can be hot, 30 centigrade, once the train reaches Exeter, Devon it starts to cloud and by the time it reaches Plymouth (last station before crossing river to Cornwall) it is thick cloud and 14 centigrade.
I moved back to Cornwall several years ago and I'm still waiting for a nice summer. The weather forecasters always forget the Cornish weather is totally different to the English weather, and I'm constantly disappointed when I hear blue skies, hot and sunny only to find it doesn't include Cornwall.
Cornwall is a lovely county with alot of historical heritage especially in mining and is very popular with tourists and rich Londoners retiring there. And has the best and longest coast line in Britain - but it is wet! Despite this we have the highest water bills in the country. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
