Here in Cambridgeshire we've got our first ground frost of the Autumn this morning but with a lovely bright sky.

Yes, first frost I've seen as well (also iin Cambs) though a colleague said they'd had one yesterday morning. Beautiful clouds in a blue sky.

Damn, is it time to go to work already!

| | | Re: Gone off a bit Froze the bird-bath but not the pond. Interesting that the first frost seems to have hit the whole country at once. How often does that happen?
Will the birds come flocking back to feeders now? Haven't noticed any special activity. Only a solitary wasp foraging though ... |

Tinkerbell | We have tried that but the new radiators are still only getting luke warm even with every other radiator in the house turned off. I have phoned the plumber to come out and have a look - we're not sure if it's because of the way the pipes are running, ie, the new ones are shooting off in a new direction? Will see what the plumber says. Thanks anyway Tinkerbell

| | | Re: Gone off a bit Even colder last night - and all the birds are coming back to the garden. Perhaps unsurprisingly, all the cats are coming back as well ..... even worse, I hear the evil chatter of squirrels over the hedge .... |

| | | Re: Gone off a bit Yes this cold snap is resulting in some frantic feeding activity. The quantity of seed and nuts being consumed in my garden has rocketed with quite large flocks of chaffinches (up to 18) and collared doves (20+) clearing the ground almost as fast as I scatter the seed!
The squirrels have also been more active with at least two in the garden as I write this.
Worse still, the cold seems to have brought the rats in off the fields! We've had one visiting and feeding under the bird tables for a few days now and my wife's absolutely terrified of going out into the garden when they're around. Fortunately I managed to take it out with a single shot from the air rifle at first light this morning.
