| | | Icicle of the Day We've got Bird of the Day, Fungus of the Day so why not ..... Icicle of the Day - on a cottage on the Malham Tarn Estate, currently just over two metres long and still growing, it should reach the ground in approximately 3 days time at current growth rate:

| | | Re: Icicle of the Day I love icicles! Haven't spotted any really good ones yet but I've heard there are some crackers in Chee Dale, hanging from the limestone cliffs.

| | | Re: Icicle of the Day You don't want to stand under them in a thaw. I've put up a picture elsewhere of what has been greeting us for the last few mornings:
These are growing down from the frozen roof gutter over our bedroom window - it's a bit like waking up in Pentonville!
These haven't grown to more than 1m - they drip off melt-water during the day and then re-make themselves in the darker hours of day and night!

.... | Very solid icicles those - hacksaw is on the way hidden in the usual cake.
It's starting to feel a bit like being in prison up here. The road to our place was cleared and made passable (but only to 4x4's) on Thursday after snow earlier in the week and is now blocked once again by snow blown off the surrounding fields. Snowing again at the moment and still a strong easterly wind so there will be a lot more drifting. But there are plus sides - like 2 metre (and growing) icicles and some lovely landscapes.

| | | Re: Icicle of the Day I took these pics yesterday of some of the icicles at the back of our house:
Today, one of them came crashing down onto the path I regularly use on my way to top up the bird feeders! This was only part of it and my boot is to show the scale (me thinks I would've had one helluva headache if I'd been walking past at the time ): |

| | | Re: Icicle of the Day We already have them cleared out every spring! There are lots of trees in our garden, plus because our house is the last one at the end of a sloping cul-de-sac, we also seem to acquire all the neighbourhood leaves too. Every autumn I lose count of the number of times I have to clear away several feet of leaf litter from outside our front door!! |
