| | | Re: Thunder and lightning in winter? I remember Christmas 1999 when I was living in Beer (Devon). In just one day, we had sunshine, rain, hail, thunder, lightening, snow, gale force winds and then back to sunshine and calm again. It was amazing to watch the different fronts coming in off the sea.

| | | Re: Thunder and lightning in winter? We had thunder and lightening on Tuesday at about 18.15 here just North of Bolton. First I thought someone had taken a picture with a flash right outside my living room. But then thunder followed within maybe 4 seconds. The two further flashes were nearer and we had a small amount if rain to accompany them

| | | Re: Thunder and lightning in winter? Didn't see or hear any in Leigh but I have seen electrical storms in December before when snow has been on the ground - something to do with the warm and cold (or vice versa?) fronts meeting. I have thought it was dark enough a couple of times over the past week in the direction of Rivvington and Bolton to produce the odd flash and clap of thunder tho ........ |

| | | Re: Thunder and lightning in winter? I knew that there had been a winter's day when we'd had snow and lightning at the same time and it's taken me a while to go back through my records to find it. It was January 28th 2004 when I noted that there was snow and thunder and lightning...an unusual winter combination. As it happened in the early evening it came as an even greater shock especially as the day had been cold and dry. The wind direction had changed to the N and brought a squally shower with it.
A couple of friends in Hampshire commented to me yesterday that they had had thunder and lightning, for one it actually blew the fuses in the garage and the storm produced over an inch of rain. |

| | | Re: Thunder and lightning in winter? Yeah, had some superb thunder & lightening last night along with some really heavy rain, but it didn't seem to dent the snow much - there was still a lot of ice and about 4-5 inches of snow on the ground this morning. Made for some 'interesting' walking & driving today |
