| | | "Moonset"?? Not certain where to post this.
Well one day when I woke up at about 7:00 I saw this out my window:
It was definately the moon as the sun was on the other side of the sky but it was lit up red and it was definately "setting". You could stare at it and you could actually see it sink in the sky, and it was only visible for about 1 minute. I have never seen this before. (Oh and I am living in Canada at the moment).
I am not sure how to explain it. |

Perhaps the reason you have never seen it before is just because you have never been up at the right time!
The moon will often look red when it is low in the sky, just as the sun does - it is the effect of the greater amount of Earth's atmosphere the light has to pass through filtering out the blue part of the spectrum.

| | | Re: "Moonset"?? I have never been sure but I always catch the bus at the same time each morning. I have seen the moon several times but it is usually high in the sky and appearing white/ normal colour. I have sometimes seen the moon at night being orange (not a lunar eclipse) so I am guessing it it just to do with it being in exactly the right position in the sky? Thanks for the explanation . |

| | | Re: "Moonset"?? I know this as an Harvest moon as in the Neil Young song. It is as you say to do with the atmosphere and the way it magnification becomes distorted. the red is the pollution the same that effects the sunsets I believe great picture. Look out in the UK October is a good month for spotting this phenomenon

Found another picture on the internet here: http://blogs.phillyburbs.com/news/bc...7/0910Moon.jpg |

| | | Re: "Moonset"?? Treehawk,
Breath-taking shot. I would be grateful if you could list the camera, lens and parameters, etc., you used so that one day i may produce something similar myself. Any tricks to get the correct amount of exposure of the moon?
Cheers,

| | | Re: "Moonset"?? I just used a Panasonic DMC-FZ18 for the picture, no lens/ tripods or changes in contrast etc.
Its pictured exactly as I saw it. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
