Most of the snow had gone by yesterday morning, apart from a scattering on the hills. This is sunrise over the Wear Valley 20th December 2011.

Very nice Karen, we get these very purple skies occasionally at dawn, they change quickly so you have to have a camera on hand to get them. I think we get icy rain after one of them.

I remember reading somewhere that red skies in the morning are due to moisture in the atmosphere coming in from the west and the sun reflecting off this as it rises in the east - with a good chance of rain later. Similarly red sky at night is often caused by moisture moving away and the sun's rays reflecting... but I can't get my head around it. Something to do with east and west winds... aaargh. Sorry. Forget this post it's rubbish.
If anyone has a sensible explanation I'd be very interested. And grateful, as the Other Half thinks I am off my rocker with my gobbledegook weather lore.  |
