| | | nightclouds = noctilucent cloud wow - got my 1st sighting this summer of elusive noctilucent cloud [NLC] in late dusk tonight from SW London - at 80km high they glow blue in sunlight streaming over the polar regions
Cirrus, at much lower altitude, seen in silhouette towards horizon.

| | | Re: nightclouds = noctilucent cloud Excellent photo's nytecam, I'm still haven't seen these yet. I read that they are most common in years of solar minimum so I suppose this year is a good year to try and see them, hopefully there'll be plenty of clear nights, everyone keep a look out! |

| | | Re: nightclouds = noctilucent cloud As said previously, I have not seen this type of cloud, or just accepted it because I did not know what it was. I think there are other metreological
threads here on WAB, interesting post thank you

| | | Re: nightclouds = noctilucent cloud Thanks everyone for your interest - my pics are timed in UT/GMT or +1hr for BST. 1030-1100BST seems about the best time for me but it can vary with your latitude.
I think some science could come out of the central oval feature recorded from many parts of the UK for precise range [many 100s of km] and altitude etc using the bright star in each pic of Capella for reference. This area of the cloud was moving very slowly up the sky away from the horizon in my sequence - took 42 NLC pics that evening

| | | Re: nightclouds = noctilucent cloud here's the NE horizon at dawn this morning June 18 but no NLC - the cirrus is partially illuminated by the crescent moon off-frame to the right. The moon in the sky at same time can lead to false NLC reports so caution needed
The star centre-left is Capella - a common 'marker' for NLC in summer. |

| | | Re: nightclouds = noctilucent cloud Apparently there was a very good display last night, typically I missed it and I was out looking too! Are they always near the horizon? if they are that might be a problem for me as there is a great big hill in the way!
