| | | Sea freezing Monday night we had a clear sky and it was very cold.
The sea where it comes into the salt marsh had started to freeze.
When the tide went out it left the mud covered in a layer of thin ice.
I don't know at what temperature salt water will freeze. |

Sea water freezes at a different temperature than fresh water because of the salinity - the freezing point lowers by 0.5 C by every ppt of salinity, the average being a freezing point being -2 C (according to my books )

| | | Re: Sea freezing The mobility of the sea makes a difference too. It has to be darn perishing to freeze the sea. I remember parts of the sea freezing at Red Rocks on the Dee Estuary when I was a kid in the winter of 1981 I think. There were also small ice floes coming down the estuary. Good days.

Not being of pure Cornish blood I didn't really think it fair for me to partake in such a tradition!

I was working in the Canadian Beaufort sea in October so we watched the sea starting to freeze and it was at -2 c.
