Signs of Spring

Yesterday I went walking near Norton Mandeville, nr Ongar in Essex and spotted 3 clumps of primroses in bloom.

Surely this is a bit early? What does everyone else think? Has anyone else seen evidence of Spring approaching?

Re: Signs of Spring

I have a lone Primrose out. I usually get an odd one like this, before the real flush of flowers in March.

Regards, Chris

Re: Signs of Spring

Saw a few Snowdrops and crocus in the church yards over the week end ..Plus the leaves of Lords and Ladies are popping up...and the Lesser Periwinkle was showing its purple flower.. quite a colourful week end even though it was rather dull and wet at times...

Re: Signs of Spring

Here is a photo taken on 10th December that I posted on the forum some time ago. Daffodils and autumn leaves! There are even more daffodils out in my garden now. Lots of buds around too.

So, does spring now officially start in December?

Jenny

Plenty of daffodil leaves starting to sprout out of the ground in our woods in work and same with my bluebells in the garden, however, no flowers as such that I've seen yet.

Re: Signs of Spring

Thanks everyone interesting to hear that Spring is appearing elsewhere. I also saw daffodils in bloom this week and snowdrops too. I wonder if we will pay for it later?

Re: Signs of Spring

Twas a lovely spring-like day here in Scarborough on Sunday, sunny and mild. Though I hear that colder weather is on the way from Friday onwards!

Re: Signs of Spring

We now have loads of Snowdrops out and the buds on the Daffs look about to burst and we have some shrubs looking as if their buds are about to open including a couple of Blueberry Bushes which are showing green, we have bitterly cold weather forecast for a few days from Friday including possible snow showers so I'd better get the fleece ready.

Re: Signs of Spring

Spotted just one of our little miniature daffs out in the park yesterday (Pennington Flash, Lancashire) also some hawthorns on the south side where they grow protected in the middle of a tree planted area, were already well on in leaf.

Where I used to work at Orrell Water Park there is a hawthorn bordering the main road that always came into leaf by the 19th of Feb each year!

Many years ago I remember a family day out on the 1st of Jan to Smardale Gill to find a clump of primrose in full flower! They were very sorry looking - but they appeared to be genuine wild primrose, growing on the banking in quite a protected spot, but far from housing and gardens.

Still winter here, but being 300 metres up in the hills of the Peak District, it's not surprising.

Re: Signs of Spring

Here, in the most southerly town in England (the Cornish don't consider themselves to be English) spring comes early. Primroses start in December and are flowering well now. A couple of early crocuses and the winter flowering Iris (reticulata & unguicularis) are flowering but suffering a bit from wind and rain. Mahonia is covered in tiny yellow flowers.

But how about Michaelmas Dasies in flower, the white petal and yellow centred form. Three flowers at the moment which are a bit small and struggling with the wind.

Trying to get all the pruning done now before the birds start nesting.
