Nothing to do with the gales but this was the 'worst' day of the year for weather - cold, wet and windy .. but tonight still, clear and (relatively) warm - snow on the way? Not on any of the forecasts .... |

I'd heard of the theory that an increase in temperature could cause an increase the amount and strength of tropical storms but I haven't heard that is could cause such an increase in wind speeds in the UK.
I'm just about to start studying global warming as part of my studies, could you let me know where you got that info from because I'd be quite interested in it. Ta

| | | Re: Severe Gales 90mph will be the maximum speed of some gusts, not the average wind speed I'd imagine, as average wind speeds of this velocity would be classed a hurricane. |

| | | Re: Severe Gales Tell me about it - Cornwall has been lashed by gales since about 10pm last night, and even thought the forecast said it would ease off by 6pm tonight, its still gusting really badly in the passing squalls. We are right in the middle of the county - albeit on high ground, but I dread to think what its been like on the coast.
We got up this morning to find the corrugated roof of our barn had been peeled back like a sardine can, and 2 thoroughly soaked goats and a panic stricken pony huddled in the corner of our field. Luckily none were physically harmed, and our cat who normally spends the night in there had quite wisely decided to stay indoors last night. Can't believe how we didn't hear anything as we sleep with our window open all year round and its only 50 feet from the house.
Spent the morning battling with the twisted sheets, between passing squalls - dangerous work really, but had to be done to save any more damage. Managed to secure the remaining roof and make the animal's area water tight and safe for them. Still have a huge gaping hole, but atleast everything of value has been moved to safer areas. Luckily the weather was so wet last week, I didn't get round to going for my usual stock up on hay and straw, which would have been ruined!
Could have been a lot worse I suppose - neither man nor beast was hurt, even though me and hubby feel like we've done a few rounds with Ricky Hatton - aches and pains all over from fighting the wind!!!!! |
