Re: first snow

despite ever frequent looks out the window still no snow here. Hope it does and i can do a sledging pub thing round the Downs. Going down one of the steep wooded slopes here isn't a patch on bob sleighing! Bit dangerous though but fun as stopping isn't possible!!!

We had about an inch of snow here yesterday evening, but it had all gone by the morning.

The Royal Oak (or the Heights as it's locally known), between Denshaw and Delph. An old favourite, with a lot of character.

Re: first snow

Surprisingly we have not had any sleet or snow yet either up here in West Lothian. In fact, it is surprisingly mild for this time of year but last evening it was soooooo wet I was out and got literally soaked to the skin.

By the way, all of you who have replied from the Derbyshire area, does anyone remember the Fairfield Filling Station in Buxton which was run by my aunt and uncle in the late 50's and early 60's.

Re: first snow

A very tiny amount of sleet in Kent this morning that finished almost as soon as it started! Still bitterly cold here with groundfrost, what are the odds on it being a white christmas this year?

Re: first snow

Hi Pigeon feather,

Weather reports so far give most of us only a 10% chance of a white Christmas (except Scotland which has a 20% chance.) Haven't had any sleet yet here in Swindon, Wiltshire but has been bitterly cold (down to -3 on Saturday night.) Freezing winds from Eastern Europe have also added to the bitter temperatures. It would be lovely to see some snow, so let's hope the weather predictions aren't all that accurate.
Regards, Snowhound

Talking Re: first snow

Thanks Tuftie, I do hope you're right. Swindon often seems to miss out so they tell me. Sure feels like it's going to snow tonight though, although I haven't seen anything yet so far and it's now 03:15. It's very cold out there and all clouded over but perhaps it's just too cold. I work nights and whenever I go out on one of those naughty cigarette breaks I freeze to death and check for any signs of snow! They don't call me the Snowhound for nothing!

Re: first snow

I was once told it could only snow between 4 degrees and -4 degrees - not sure how true that is though?

That isn't quite true as I've seen it snow at 9C and I'm sure it can snow much lower than -4C. There are quite a lot of other factors that determine whether it'll snow apart from ground level temperature, I'm sure some one who knows alot more will alleviate.

It can actually even snow at under -40C (although likely a light snow) but the ideal temperature for heaviest snow is when the temperature is not far from freezing, about -4 to 0C and the relative humidity has risen to at least 100%.

Frigid air can "hold" less water vapour (which is obviously needed for snow to form) than merely chilly air. That is why arctic climates often get surprisingly little snow. Barrow, Alaska, for example, gets less snow than Chicago in an average year, despite having winters that average 22C colder.

Hope this helps a little.

Snowhound
