Severe Flood Warning In East

Severe flood warnings are in place on parts of the east coast of England, with the Environment Agency warning of "extreme danger to life and property".

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was chairing an emergency Cobra meeting, as low pressure and strong winds combined to cause a North Sea tidal surge.

Norfolk and Suffolk have seven severe flood warnings. Parts of Kent, Essex, North Yorks and Lincs are on alert.

BBC NEWS | England | Flooding 'may put lives at risk'

Hope nobody here is going to be affected by this.

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

Just watched the news about this on tv. It really doesn't look good - hope all WAB'ers and friends/family in the area are aware and on alert and listening to radio / watching tv for updates.

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

Just heard this on the radio. Apparently there is a metre high storm surge heading down the North Sea. Not sure where it will make landfall.

If you can, I really recommend you do move out. They are telling you in your own interest and people who refuse to accept the advice make the job a hell of a lot harder for those controlling this incident. They don't tell people to move out for the hell of it - the pro's and cons are very heavily weighed by many organisations (police, fire brigade, local council, nearby hospitals etc) and at the end of the day they want people to remain alive and un-injured.

This isn't a personal attack at you so please don't take it that way, but if the worst happens and you're stuck in your house which is damaged/unsafe, do you expect (for example) firefighters to come and rescue you? By putting your life at risk you are endangering the lives of others also.

If, however, you are adamant about refusing to leave, and you have any elderly/disabled/very young people living nearby (who also aren't leaving) then if you could keep an eye on them it would be greatly appreciated by those controlling the incident.

Just watching the news and it looks like it's going to be a sleepless night for many. Hope those of you in those areas escape too much damage.

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

We are just far enough from the sea wall on a hill, so I'm hoping all will be well. However, my 'patch' will be in danger, along with all of it's special species.
Good luck everyone near the path of the surge waters. Stay safe and hopefully we'll be discussing a near miss in the morning. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for your concern, we haven't had any more phone calls so are still on middle risk.

I am not by the sea but close to the end of the river Orwell so we get warned to be on the safe side, I am closely watching the news.

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

I don't know how far down the coast you are but I have just been watching the news and whilst the surge hasn't quite been as high as the forecast it is still very high. Blakeney has suffered badly as has a few other places.

I think the surge will hit the lower areas of Suffolk later this morning so fingers crossed it won't be too bad.

John

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

Just like to pass on my best wishes to all WAB members in the area as well. I haven't seen the latest forecast, but the pictures last night looked pretty ominous.

Cathy & I know the north Norfolk coast pretty well (especially the stretch between Titchwell, Holkham and Blakeney) and have a lot of affection for the area & its' residents. We also know how vulnerable the coastal plains, lagoons and saltmarshes can be - we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that none of you are affected by the surge.

Take care, everyone.
Derek

Re: Severe Flood Warning In East

Hoping everyone is ok. Saw there was some flooding but it wasn't as bad as it could have been (obviously bad for those who have been flooded). Better to be safe than sorry as we here in Glos know too well.
