My woodpecker has been a bit frantic about ramming peanuts into holes in the pole outside my bedroom, moreso than I can remember in previous autumns so maybe he knows something I don't .
Last night I stuck my head out of the window to record a Tawny Owl and nearly got my nose frozen off! This is what October used to feel like when I was a kid.

| | | Re: winter forecasts Oh I'd love some decent snow. Haven't had any since being a child. All we seem to get is a bit here and there that freezes and makes walking suicidal. |

| | | Re: winter forecasts Well, whatever the winter weather turns out to be I do hope we get some bright sunny days after the summer we have had. Looking out through the window now it is such a grey miserable day here in Bolton! |

| | | Re: winter forecasts In 1947 I was just a teenager, but I can remember the hardship that winter brought to humans as well as wildlife, we still had rationing. in 1963 I was a Derbyshire fireman, a very busy time for us, but for the poor wildlife, the rivers Lathkill ,Derwent, Dove, all the canals in the area and the streams, all were severely affected. it appeared most of the Kingfishers and a lot of other wildlife perished in that winter, and not a few humans, no please dont pray for a cold winter, I'm not adverse to a little snow (on Christmas cards) If you really want snow and ice, ive heard Russia is nice in the winter regards Jon |

| | | Re: winter forecasts Good snow in 81 and i loved every minute playing out in it. Sledging, making snowmen, snowball fights, Making fresh tracks, Making skid patches in the roads to see who could skid the furthest what fun and for free !!! How bright it makes winter look instead of the gray drab days when there isn't a leaf to be seen. I'm sure it must help reduce SAD?

| | | Re: winter forecasts good snow in 63, struggling to keep one tap from freezing, carrying buckets of water for the cows and pigs all day and half the night, I wonder how much enviromentally friendly salt will get spread on the roads if the winter of 2007/08 is as bad as 63 | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
