I wouldnt bet against him, The annoying old devil has a habit of being correct.

I'm sure I was told a long time ago that Scandinavian thrushes come across the north sea, work their way down south and across to the continent and then come back up the country - anyone confirm or deny that for me please?

Pauline | Winter Thrushes genrally appear to come in from the north east. They will take the shortest route across water that they can. However has seen them arriving on the south coast from the south. It will depend on weather condition that they encounter when migrating. Some may overshoot and make their way back. Hope that helps.

| | | Re: winter forecasts The winter thrushes here in the South Pennines were early this autumn (last week in Sept'), but numbers seem low. However hedgerow berries are scant this year in these parts. This probably explains why I am getting stacks of birds on the table and feeders in the garden.

Both with 20+ birds. |

My woodpecker has been a bit frantic about ramming peanuts into holes in the pole outside my bedroom, moreso than I can remember in previous autumns so maybe he knows something I don't .
Last night I stuck my head out of the window to record a Tawny Owl and nearly got my nose frozen off! This is what October used to feel like when I was a kid.

Sledging, making snowmen, snowball fights, Making fresh tracks, Making skid patches in the roads to see who could skid the furthest what fun and for free !!! How bright it makes winter look instead of the gray drab days when there isn't a leaf to be seen. I'm sure it must help reduce SAD?

After that well it's borrowing neigbours kids for an excuse to make snow animals and have general fun!

Annabel (one of my cats) loved it last February - thought it was a great adventure! Am looking forward to seeing how my dog takes to it as I doubt he's seen snow before.
