| | | Re: Earthflight I have just watched Earthflight on BBC 1 tonight and as has already been said it was 'awesome'.
The photography was superb and the narration so very clear and informative.
The scenes of large numbers of Snowgeese, Pelicans , Eagles and Waders etc striving to find food and thus survive was so very interesting.
From the Cowbirds who were so dependent on the Bison herds to the Waders (sanderling, sand pipers, turnstones and dunlin) attracted by Horseshoe crabs and the Pelicans feeding on spawning fish, this in my opinion was one of the best 'nature programmes' to have been on TV for a very long time. Can only hope BBC will continue to serve up more programmes of this quality.
Certainly my kind of 'wildlife programme.

And the low level photography made the most of the fact that turnstones are not shy - 'ours' at Fleetwood marinia will run up and round you if you lie on the grass and scatter a bit of seed or crumb - the same with the birds at Salthouse 3 years ago - three of us laid there in the dusk - all the other photographers had gone - and we literally had turnstones and snow bunting running round and over our legs as we laid there - just like this latest prog brom the Beeb - MAGIC and so so welcome!

| | | Re: Earthflight I managed to catch this programme tonight too – absolutely fantastic. The very tired and weak Snow Goose was one extremely lucky [and determined] girl escaping the clutches of one of the awaiting Bald Eagles, which was a long and drawn out chase.
It was fascinating to learn that Cowbirds lay their eggs in other birds’ nests (Cuckoo style) so that they can continue to follow the Bison on their passages, but then it got me wondering that if Bison were to become extinct, what would happen to the Cowbirds? A very delicate balancing act going on there.
Can ‘t wait for the Africa one too. |

| | | Re: Earthflight Agree- tremendous filming + a joy to behold. I think that plucky solo Snow Goose deserved to survive. Loved the food passes between the Bald eagle families.
Many years ago I visited the bat cave in Texas + what an awesome spectacle seeing all those Mexican Free-tailed Bats emerging like a long plume of smoke (after much smaller numbers of Cave Swallows entered for the night) + then watching the raptors, mainly Red-tailed Hawks, turning up for supper.
Look forward to seeing the Africa programme. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
