| | | Re: The Wild Places of Essex It was quite heavily based on his book, The Wild Places, which I thought was brilliant. Somehow prose that seems a bit florid but beautiful on paper comes across as pretentious on screen. I don't think including Roger Deakin really fitted in that well for the TV show either.
Deakin's house is in Suffolk for a start and his part in the book is more about showing how "wildness" isn't only to be found in the grand mountains and moors of the furthest north and western parts of this country but on a variety of scales all over these isles. This isn't explained well in the show so, instead of anything poignant, we find ourselves watching some guy show us around his deceased mate's shed.
Anyway, the variety of opinions here on the show and in comparison to his book is quite interesting. Goes to show that nature lovers aren't just one homogenous group of people with the same tastes. |
