| | | Chemistry - a volatile history Well, chemistry is the basis of all life so it's good to see a brief (3 episodes) series about great moments of chemistry on BBC4 at 9 pm (2100 hrs). About time there was something interesting on! |

| | | Re: Chemistry - a volatile history My greatest moment in Chemistry was when our Chemistry Teacher was demonstrating making Hydrogen by allowing Hydrochloric Acid to pour from a Thistle Funnel onto some magnesium held in a conical jar with a spout.
Just like this, only it had a tap to trun the acid flow on and off. http://www.naugraexport.com/glass/thistle.jpg
The teacher turned the tap and let half the acid into the flask. When he said he was going to light the hydrogen coming out of the spout to demonstrate its presence, someone piped up, wondering why it wouldn't just explode. Ah-ha, the teacher said, it won't because all the oxygen in the flask has been displaced by the hydrogen.
So he lit it. And it exploded. The thistle funnel, still half full of acid, shot upwards and smashed into the ceiling, sending broken glass and hydrochloric acid over most of the pupils. Oh, how we laughed!
These days everyone wears safety glasses. I don't think our school thought them appropriate. |

| | | Re: Chemistry - a volatile history Oh, and there's more.
Several months later, the same chemistry teacher was demonstrating Bromine. He was at great pains to warn us that getting Bromine onto your skin was extremely dangerous. (Bromine has a tendency to eat its way through flesh and then have a good gnaw on your bones for desert).
Anyway, halfway through the experiment he suddenly dissapeared. We kind of fended for ourselves in total confusion until the bell went for end of lesson.
Several days later the chemistry teacher returned to school with a massive bandage on his arm, apparently the result of emergency treatment for serious Bromine burns. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
