| | | Natural World - Ribbon of Life Did anyone see tonight's Natural World? All about the wildlife that thrives in the no-man's-land of the Iron Curtain. Fantastic achievement by all sides! |

| | | Re: Natural World - Ribbon of Life Best viewing for a long time and an inspiration to conservation organizations in the UK if they could only focus and co-ordinate resources in the same way. The most successful conservation project in the world along an 8,000 mile corridor which once separated east and west in Europe from the Arctic to the Balkans.

| | | Re: Natural World - Ribbon of Life I watched it and enjoyed it, it shows that wild life doesn't need looking at to make it thrive, but targetted work (V. expensive) can be very helpful. |

Such a smart simple idea made reality. [now why didn't we keep the borders between us and them (choose which one you are, E, S, or W, the 'them' are the other side)]
The Riesen Trappen (Bustard) are magnificent birds, regal in bearing. I saw them from about 25 metres away, they didn't care a fig about me being so close.
We used to drop 'Blitzschlag' carcasses out for our Lammers. I was always impressed with the speed they found, 'scented', the meat. The skies would be clear, then suddenly there would be a dot so high up that even 12x bins didn't define it, then two, three, four. After about twenty mins the heavens were full of circling black crosses descending, but rapidly. Roughly an hour later the cadaver was bones and not a bird to be seen except Ravens and Crows. Fantastic!
I watched a fella on a power hang glider struggle with his ascent, the sky had two other occupants. A Viggen at height and an Eagle (Steinadler) The only one with grace and poise was the feathered Lord of the Sky. The two man-made items looked primitive and slow. The Eagle seemed to be at the greater altitude (wasn't of course). The Viggen rammed its way along, the chap in the glider stumbled, but the Eagle was an integral part of the sky. Wonderful day! I'll never forget it.

| | | Re: Natural World - Ribbon of Life Stumbled across it by accident and stayed to watch - one of the best progs for ages - did me a power of good. Did anyone else think they could hear a Golden Oriel singing? I thought I could but as its not something I normally hear I couldn't be sure - anyone else clock it?

| | | Re: Natural World - Ribbon of Life A great programme. These type of wildlife films I like best, containing species I know and love. I especially enjoyed watching the antics of the bustards.
Sorry Pauline, I missed the oriole...orioling. A shame because the song is an absolute delight.
