I have heard cuckoos at my local reserve and also at Northward Hill in Kent. I was toying with the idea of taking a portable CD player and playing the male's call to see if I could attract one. I don't think I could make a convincing call myself like Nick did. (No Ruth, you weren't the only ones to try! )

Jeff | As it happens I'm just down the road too!
They are wonderful birds, I'd actually read about most of what was in the programme as it was featured in the BBC Wildlife magazine a few months ago. It was still a fantastic watch and proof that David A is still, in my opinion the most authoritative and eloquent narrator of the natural history documentaries on the beeb. Long may he live!
I went to Wicken several times over the summer and never heard a cuckoo - ironically it was south of Cambridge that I heard (and saw) one at Fowlmere and also at Lackford Lakes near Bury. I do feel very privileged to live in this part of the country where we have so many wonderful reserves.

| | | Re: Natural World. A friend tells me that you don't actually have to be that accurate - an approximation will often bring in the Cuckoo.
