| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights Yes, I just watched it. What an amazing programme. Wish that the Beeb produced more like it.
I've never seen them like that but would love to. A few years ago there was a very brief sighting of them in the northern sky even down here in Dorset, but I reckon that it was more like her 'green streak' that she saw in the Lofoten Islands!
Any more wabers fancy the trip north? |

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights Though not as spectacular as Joanna Lumley's experiences, we frequently get good displays during the winter months here in The Highlands, and on occasion they can extend much further south - there was a tremendous display in 2006 that was seen to good effect in East Anglia.
There are two very good websites that give reliable forecasts on when they become active, one of which you can subscribe to that will provide free e-mail alerts: (On the latter one you will need to switch to the "Europe" tab) Welcome to AuroraWatch The Geophysical Institute Auroral Forecast Page

We're in a low sunspot activity period, so there's not so much electromagnetic activity from the Sun. |

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights Another great programme from the BBC. The display at the end was magical and very moving. I have seen the lights twice, once in Lincolnshire, just green swirls in the sky, and once in northern Scotland the sky was lit with blues reds and greens, an amazing site but nothing compared to ponny the penguins experience

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights I really enjoyed the programme too. I was looking forward to seeing the programme when I saw it in the TV listings, as the one time I saw the northern lights (when I was working in Sweden) was one of the most magical and memorable experiences of my life. |

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights I saw and enjoyed the programme, but there was something unconvincing about the scene where Joanna Lumley was looking up at the sky with the northern lights. It somehow looked like a montage.

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights The BBC programme was EXCELLENT .... I recorded it to watch again .... and again .... and again.
It must be a truly wonderful experience to see such a spectacle.
I was planning a trip to Arctic Norway in December to see the Orcas in Tysfjord and hopefully see the Northern Lights too. Unfortunately for various reasons I will have to defer that trip. However, the BBC prograame has just made the urge to go at sometime even stronger.

Sorry - couldn't resist. I've been a Lumley fan for years.
Seriously though, It was a great programme. I'd love the opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis.

| | | Re: Joanna Lumley in the Land of the Northern Lights I still think there was something fishy about the scene where Joanna Lumley was looking up at the Northern Lights.
I think that the cloud never cleared while they were there, and they weren't going to go back empty-handed - so they montaged a shot of Joanna Lumley and an archive shot of the Aurora.
