Im a bit of a Darwin addict and the whole 'Creationism v's Evolution'.

Dont even get me started....but this is just a quick heads up there is a program (it may be a series but i didnt hear it all) by Darwin expert and fellow author Dawkin's on Monday 8:00 (cant remember which side soz)

The Genius of Charles Darwin.

Good programme - but I can see the complaints to channel 4 from the anti-evolutionists already: " how dare he ask children to look at the evidence..."

One thing I love about Darwin is that the more you find out about him, the deeper he seems to be. He was so interested!

Would he be on WAB? I think he would have been.

Rats! I missed this thread and didn't know it was on. Managed to catch the second half on C4+1 and can watch the whole thing on line but I would have recorded it if I'd known. It's probably not the sort of thing they'll rush to release on DVD but you never know.

I've set up timer recordings for the next two.

Saw the programme last evening - very interesting, learnt a few things about Darwin that I had not heard of before such as his study of the selective breeding of racing pigeons - very interesting to see the actual specimens are still kept in that museum.

Richard Dawkins knows he really is up against the immovable objects of the worlds religions - God believing people will never accept what he says because their whole concept of everything would collapse. Scientific knowledge does not go far enough to offset everything they would percieve as losing or replace the whole supporting social infrastructure of religion. I do not think the use of scientific logic and evidence cuts any ice or gets anywhere with religious people. The worlds religions are enormously wealthy and religions and are growing so science really has got its work cut out to persuade people that there is not a big God in the sky who designed and built everything.

Not as immovable as they once were. Most Christian faiths, including Catholicism, have now accepted evolution even though some followers of those faiths have not. I believe the official line is that "evolution and religious faith are not in conflict", which is probably true at least to the extent that a supreme being could just as easily have created a world with evolution in it as one without. This position only becomes problematic for those who take a very literal reading of the bible. But they quickly run into Ned Flanders' problem...
