| | | Re: Born to be wild BBC 4 Hmmm..the age thing...something that i have noticed throughout the industry.
The truth is that the industry or naturalist world is way dominated by the silver and blue rinse age bracket....lovely as they are (well some of you anyway).
Infact other than this series i have always thought the tv programs paint a FALSE picture of what its really like out there...it fooled me into getting into volunteering and doing a degree in this stuff after watching an endless bevvy of lovely 20 to 35 yr old girls who according to series like nature of britian, british isles, autumn watch, and all the rest of them seem to work or volunteer throughout the country....as well as guys in the same age bracket...well im damned if i havent come across a single one in my 3 or 4 years now of volunteer/study of natural history!.
Obviously the directors of those series search for the very very few minority of young attractive people to use in their programs but in reality they are as rare as an adonis blue on a shingle beach.
You only have to look through the members....ok...the 'active members' on WAB to see which side of the first LIVE AID (87) members are weighted on...those that were there or watched it live on tv?...and those that were not born then!
So if anything i like this new series for showing that actually...these are the people who are out there....mostly retired folk...surveying for free...so that people like me getting a degree in the same subject cant get a job or get paid to do the same thing....when Arthur from scunthorpe will do it happily for free!.

I've seen some strange holes in the ground round RP which I suppose could have been made by 6" white stilettos... nothing better for breaking up shallow iron pan I'm told...
Mind you there's some fairly strange outdoor footwear on display in Surrey too:
On a more serious note - I think one of the things the programme was trying to get across was that fieldwork takes time and a half - the notebook in the adder programme bore testimony to that. Presenting real natural history as something that delivers instant returns would have been misleading. And when you're in your 20s you have much more pressing matters to deal with! I thought the continuity element in that programme was excellent... how many of us have notes that would be of any use to anyone else let alone someone to hand them over to? |
