It's just the web article that is dated last Sunday - the series is being shown in October and a DVD released in November. Made by the BBC Natural History Unit so we can expect top-notch footage. We'll just have to put up with Alan Titchmarsh!

Oh well, he's ok. It's the content of the programmes that I'm looking forward to.

Thanks for the heads up Wild-Woman, looks great! I hope the series spends a decent amount of time on plantlife.

Re: The Nature of Britain-heads up

Just ordered my copy of the book from Amazon. I just hope the series lives up to my expectations (and everyone else's I'm sure). I dislike Alan Titchmarsh but like Wild-Woman says its the content of the programmes that matters.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Just received this info from the BBC.

The BBC Breathing Places newsletter .

Be an armchair naturalist and don't miss The Nature of Britain on BBC One at 9pm on Wednesdays, from October 10th. This fascinating celebration of British wildlife is presented by Alan Titchmarsh. But if you do miss it, don't worry, as you can catch up on Sundays at 6pm on BBC Two.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Well I'll be fixed to my chair on Oct 10th at 9pm BBC1 as Alan did a snippet on our local station to say one of his highlights was to see Otter prints along the river Wharfe - JUST NEAR ME!!!!

The programme sounds great, I love alan titchmarsh too so double fab stuff. I too spend a lot of spare time on my pc, the best way to remember something like this is to write it on a 'post it' and pop it onto the front of your monitor

Looks like it's worth watching I have a friend (yes 1 ) who thinks that Alan Titchmarsh is the best thing since sliced bread, if he knocked on her door, her hubby would be out

He would be welcome to fondle my welsh poppies any time Hope they have insects on this one, nearly always a shortage of insect footage on nature progs.

Couldn't resist, have ordered the book. That 'order with one click' thing is just too tempting. My finger sorta fell on the button!

Still, we can't have Alan Titchmarsh hard up now can we!

Re: The Nature of Britain

I got my Nature of Britain book last week. The photographs are great but I found it a bit disappointing. I thought it would have descriptions of places as well as wildlife but it hasn't, it is separated into chapters describing habitats and the wildlife found in each. In other words it is a large, simple field guide with some good quality photographs.

Re: The Nature of Britain

I doubt that'll buy the book (though will certainly look at it in the shops!) but look forward to the programme very much.

Liking (or not) a particular presenter is a very personal matter. Some years ago when I asscoiated Alan Titchmarsh with Pebble Mill (you have to be above a certain age!) I didn't particularly like him, but over the years I have warmed to him that I now appreciate his charms.

Apart from being an affable chap, he followed on from the late great Geoff Hamilton in being so influential in encouraging sustainable + organic gardening to the masses both on Gardener's World + his various publications. He may not be a professional naturalist but has a genuine enthusiasm for wildlife + at his last home planted up a butterfly meadow, small woodland, etc.

He's also a vice president of Butterfly Conservation + was the front for their recent Garden Moths Count.

In hoping to reach mass audiences (+ not just the converted like us) I think Alan will be an ideal presenter for this series. Certainly I'd prefer Alan to Bill Oddie doing this, much as I respect the latter.

I can live with the titmarsh....but being from the younger naturist brigade myself i think its time we got to see more of people like Chris Packham or Simon King on more of these wildlife related series, people who really DO know what they are talking about without being told what to say.
Oh ok...so that blonde Ellie the wildlife/ecologist from the ONE SHOW would be my first choice !

Re: The Nature of Britain

For me, the master himself, David Attenborough, is the ultimate presenter. Knows what he's talking about and delivers speech to his audience in the same way that Winston Churchill did. Leaves the ending of his masterpiece series with something thought-provoking. Stirring stuff.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Well obviously i worship at the alter that is Sir David....but as he is like 300 years old now and has already recorded his last ever tv /film piece ( for that rspb reserve) i wasnt considering him as an option.

I DONT want the titmarsh becoming the NEXT sir david when he is way too wet and basically a re dressed gardener. I want davids throse to go to someone with the same wildlfie knowledge like maybe Simon King or even an unknown. There must be a tv friendly ecologist or botanist we have yet to meet?.

I met David bellamy once , he was lost in a big jag ( with cheafuer..cant spell it) and stopped to ask me directions to bearsted village green pond...which i lived opposite handily...he spent the day filming and cleaning out the pond.

So maybe he got lost somewhere?...actually i have seen him in wildlife related press two or 3times in the last week so he is making a comeback lol...
I have a 3 dvd set he presents which i picked up for about 5 pound in one of those publisher outlet shops...cant remember the title but its all about the uk countryside and wildlife and concentrates on the national parks...lakes, peaks, pennines and the othe rones lol...its very good though.

Hi Dan - what program is that? Do you know when it is on?

Also, I though that Sir D wanted to do a life of reptiles before he gave up. Anyone know if this is still likely?
