Oh ok...so that blonde Ellie the wildlife/ecologist from the ONE SHOW would be my first choice !

Re: The Nature of Britain

Thanks Gill, I'll keep all that info in mind. I think I got very annoyed this summer when the boroughs verges were hacked down when the wild flowers were in full bloom (ox-eyed daisies etc) just make it 'tidy' for the Tour de France.
I've also seen enough removal of trees, hawthorns, spring flowers and habitats destroyed this year, to last me a lifetime here in the south east.
Reptile mitigation is being used but it's no good if the contractors damage it during works! Sorry-I should have started another thread,so I'll shut up now and cool off.:

Re: The Nature of Britain

Hi All;
I recorded the 28th Nov episode of Nature of Britian on our Sky + box, disappointing end as the very part we wanted to watch had not been recorded, this was the part where Alan says " In your area" just after the Snakes near the end of the programe, which after showed fencing in Wretham Norfolk, we were told our son apppeared on the show but as i said we were unable to view it, Does anyone know where i might view the episode perhaps on line.

Thanks....

Yes, I was very taken with the 'applauding' owls and wasn't aware of such activity. Even after checking my collection of bird books, none make reference to such goings on.

I am fortunate enough to live quite close to sporadic breeding Short Eared Owls and I might have a 'shufty' next year.

Re: The Nature of Britain

i have to say that tonights NOB (sic) was the most enjoyable so far and the passion of chris packham on the users guide shone through like a beacon ,how could you not be moved by his impassioned plea and so much common sense too ,the soloutions seem so simple.let us hope that this programme is repeated on bbc one at some time

Re: The Nature of Britain

Okay, what's going on?

Haven't yet watched tonight's Titmarsh program but watched the User's Guide on BBC4. Excellent! Best of the whole series! But over the closing credits the announcer said "The Nature of Britain: A User's Guide returns next Wednesday at ten". Does it?

NoB itself was an eight part series and tonight's main programme was the last one. Tonight's User Guide looked and felt very much like a series finale and the BBC4 listing for next Wednesday on the BBC web site shows something called "Love Soup" at 10pm (which, btw, sounds truly dreadful). So was the announcer mistaken? Was she drunk? Was it just wishful thinking? Does anyone have next week's Radio Times yet, and if so what does it say? (I always pick my copy up in Sainsbury's every Friday).

Dave P.

P.s. I hope Chris Packham went back and picked those postcards up!

Re: The Nature of Britain

I just sat for 5 minutes discussing exactly this at the end of the EXCELLENT packham program tonight...i think the announcer just made an audible typo....

Clearly it was the last titmarsh program tonight and the feel of packhams final program was very....erm.... final...

I have always wondered if those faceless announcers are live or pre recorded tapes...but i guess they must be live as they announce corrections to the planned program and news flashes etc...

But i must say BOTH titmarsh and especially packhams shows were brilliant tonight....the kind of kick in the face start to packhams...was almost controversial...and i had no idea i must admit ( even after sitting through a live talk with him in a local school last week) that he has upped sticks to France?...ha ha...
His opening lines tonight certainly had me sit up straight and my ears pricked up...very thought provoking stuff most of which i have been feeling myself since attending a lecture with Peter Taylor...the "rewildling" guru.
I just cant get enough of mr packham...( not in the same way as you Gill ) his enthusiasm is superb. I just cant believe how the BBC have missed a trick for not including the NOB Users guide series on the dvd ( please dont google NOB users guide will you?)

No, I didn't know that either. And it's quite ironic really. As Chris rightly pointed out tonight, one of the biggest negative impacts on British Wildlife in the second half of the 20th century has been the Common Agricultural Policy. And the biggest reason the CAP wasn't dead and buried twent-five years ago is...

France!

Or more specifically French farmers. Maggie would have killed it if she could and every British Government since, Conservative or Labour, has done their level best to water it down or weaken it. But always they run slap bang into the brick wall of the French farming lobby.

Perhaps that's why Chris has moved there - to agitate from within!

Re: The Nature of Britain

I thoroughly enjoyed the last Nature of Britain and Chris Packham's User guide (by the way Dan-you're not the only one who's been to one of his talks and is hooked ...and will be meeting him again in Feb!) but my biggest frustration and puzzlement is the audience this great series 'didn't' reach.

Surely, the message that ran through the whole series should have been reaching a younger audience.
Although many children stay up late, I would like to have seen the the whole thing running 2 hours earlier to catch that vital group of learners.
I run an environment club with upward of 50, 10/11 year olds and know by talking to them that the majority didn't see it. What a shame, as so much of the programme's content, is what I harp on about frequently on club days.
The future of the wildlife of Britain, really does lay in their hands and this would only have helped to reinforce the message to them.

I do hope both NoB and the users Guide is run again (yes I know it's been on Sunday's) at a peak time for children.

Anyway, if anyone from BBC's natural history unit is viewing WAB, I'd like to thank you for a first rate series that has only helped to strengthen our love of the wildlife and Nature of Britain.

And I will second that - all of it well put Jules. There is a huge need for these progs to reach youngsters. In fact my reaction every time I have seen something so good and so important is why are these progs not shown in schools - maybe they are - I do hope so. We have environmental learning at Pennington Flash with school visits from kids - it would be so much better if these kids had seen progs like these prior to their days out with us.........

Environment issues are still not getting thro to the general mass of folk - esp those that live in the big cities who see the countryside as nothing to do with them - they don't go there - it has no bearing on their daily lives - its progs like last night that instead of just banging on about the need for change - actually showed what could be done if only people would be convinved it applies to US ALL........

Re: The Nature of Britain

Sorry tonybee I can`t help you either.
On a point PMG raised my daughter who is 9 and loves anything to with nature has been allowed to stay up and watch this wonderful programme.I am sure her teachers will be cross (to say the least) to think that I am keeping her up so late. She has enjoyed every minute of it and would do it again if something like this ever appears again. As you say I think it should have been broadcast earlier to appeal to the younger ones.I have to add though that our other 3 children 9,11 and 2 were all tucked up as they have shown no interest at all.(We did try but they just chat all the way through with nothing relevant to say which defeats the whole object.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Hi Tonyb

Sorry you didnt get any help...the whole "regional" thing of NOb has been a bit of a pain...firstly obviously its regional...at the end of each titmarsh show...so i get to see what is going on here...but i would love to see what all the others saw.
Secondly...on the Sunday re runs...the 10 -15 min regional "in your area" section is not shown???????...

You could argue that the Chris Packham users guide shows were infact a collection of all the regional sections...i certainly always got a repeat of most of the "in your area" section from the earlier titmarsh shows during the packham shows...but im not so sure that they squeeze ALL of them into each packham show?...i mean how many "regions" are there? i have no idea?....i have also heard people talk of " Our group doing so and so was on the in your area part tonight" which i didnt remember seeing during the packham show?...

In this day and age of box sets...dvd's...added extras...i would have LOVED to see a full on 3 disc BBC boxset "nature of britain" including obviously all the titmarsh shows...plus all the users guide packham shows...plus an extra (how ever many hours of footage) of every single regional "in your area section"...included..

Sadly they havent even bothered to include Mr packhams masterpieces....the fools.

So ...here i am waffling on and moaning and actually havent helped your problem at all....I have all the packham shows recorded (soon) but dont remember any sections on fencing in norfolk...

Just have to pray for a re run of the entire thing and i agree with others that it so definately needs to be on earlier....i even know some fellow countryside students ( adults) in my group who have missed huge chunks and didnt stay up for the packham shows...

Incidentally...can the person in charge of the time that "Countryfile" goes out please be more realistic....its SUNDAY...its FAR TOO EARLY....and it follows SATURDAY NIGHT....no chance.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Having just had a quick trawl through the internet it would appear that chris packham does indeed have a house in france although i'm not sure where but being as he is a southampton lad born and bred and a season ticket holder at the club i suppose france is not too far away .i also saw mention of several programmes that he has in the pipeline so i'm sure we will still be seeing a lot more of him in the future, anyone interested should check out his website .the picture his daughter took and the story behind it was both stunning and entertaining ,a future presenter in the making

Re: The Nature of Britain

Tony - I'd suggest contacting the makers direct and asking - I believe they sent dvds of the regional bits out to the people who were in them , but this may have been for some speaking roles only, but if you ask nicely they might send you one.
