Thanks for the link BWD. I just get to see the London local area 10 minutes at the end of the programme in Holland now I can see Cumbria - which interests me more .

Re: The Nature of Britain

I'm assuming the Chris Packham programme is an amalgam of all the local 10 minute slots that are featured on the main progamme with a bit of "get out and help" added in. I certainly see the Eastern 10 minute slot twice every week. Are others having the same experience?

Not noticed that. But thanks for the link, Billy. It's been great to catch up on the other local bits and pieces. Nice piece on Chester Zoo's release of captive-bred Water Voles!

I understand that someone will say that it was only this episode and it will be better next week but there have been 3 awful weeks so far!

The Packham version is so so so much better and it talks about nature not released pets/feral animals! Sorry to vent my disappriciation on here but it definately is NOT the 'Nature of Britain' but the released animals of Britian.
Thing is how are people to know they're not native unless its explained in a program like this, how may queries do we get on here about strange ducks that are no only non-native but actually domestic and native wildlife to nowhere for example. There's a gap out there in this kind of knowledge and I'm happy for it to be filled even through a series like this

Re: The Nature of Britain

Yes i agree with Gill above...

With regard the Chris Packham prog i may have to eat my words a bit?
im actually now dissapointed...Indeed...the FIRST Chris Packham program was a superb hour of fact, ecology and conservation history...featuring Chris for the whole hour....now though as pointed out
i realise its just an hour of various regional ten minute segments pasted together with Chris doing links...And as stated we all get to see a repeat of our local ten minute segment...

Im NOT in any way saying the program is bad or rubbish and i like to see voluntry work from all over the country i am just gutted the Chris Packham programs didnt continue in the same vein as the First of his Programs in which i learnt so much stuff.....oh well...Both Nature of Britain progs are still excellent...AND ABOUT BRITAIN !

I'm more interested in the fact I can see my garden on that thing!

Re: The Nature of Britain

Only just watched this week's programme and thought it had some of the best footage yet. And the gannets on the preview for next week's programme looked amazing...

Re: The Nature of Britain

I especially like the honey buzzards, I didn't know they gave off a scent to calm the wasps, it was strange seeing a bird like that in the uk taking a piece of wasps nest back to its youngsters in the nest

The owls were good too

I missed the Woodland episode in the week and have just watched it tonight. It was excellent.

Re: The Nature of Britain

It's not on this week. There's some sporting event being shown instead - marbles or tiddlywinks or something. Or was it football? Nothing very important anyway.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Did anyone spot the verbal typo ( cant think what else to call it)..with the guy talking to the woman about the Great Spotted woodpeckers?...(may have been on the regional part so appologies if you dont remember this bit?)...After telling her what type of woody they were, he then told her after seeing the female...and then the male...that "the female lacks the red patch of the male on the forehead"....erm....nope....its at the back on the hindcrown actually....so nerrrrrr

Yes, a very enjoyable woodland species episode. I too especially enjoyed the Honey Buzzard.

Re: The Nature of Britain

Sorry, I'm getting ahead of myself again! When I said "this week" I should have said "this coming week". It's not on on Wednesday 21st nor on Sunday 25th.

If anyone has missed a program I've just spotted that they are being repeated again at 3:30am on Monday mornings on BBC1. If the BBC web site is correct they appear to be showing them in a different sequence as this morning was "Urban Wildlife" but next Monday is "Farmland" which I'm sure is the opposite way round to the original sequence.

I really enjoyed tonight's episode. Some beautiful habitats and very interesting behaviour. I'd never heard seen ants planting gorse before either.

Yes I thought so too, I've never witnessed or seen footage of the short-eared owl wing clap display either so that was interesting to see....

Re: The Nature of Britain

Some amazing information about wilderness habitats. I must say, I'm looking forward to the last one about verges...that'll be a right eye-opener I bet and I want ammunition to question our local authorities practise over verges, especially motorway ones.

The highways Agency (which looks after motorways) has its own biodiversty action plan and I have been involved in numerous projects with them putting up tree sparrow boxes - advising on the placement of noise barriers, advising on species mixes for planting, surveying for newts, Otters, Water Voles in adjacent habitats, translocation reptiles etc...... - I have also seen some shocking work on motorway verges though - work with no reptile fencing where there are likely to be reptiles, common spotted orchid colonies lost in a belt of planted saplings.... however, as the HA area is split up between teams for different areas - there's always going to be a different approach between areas. What you can do is get a copy of the HA BAP and wave it at the managing agent for the soft estate of an area (info used to be available on their website - though I havn't visited for a while as I haven't done any road- related work in ages) that's a bit rubbish - because they really are supposed to adhere to it!

as for Local Authorities....... that's a bit of a different story but again complaints can be made esp when you can see potential for breaking the law (veg clearance in breeding season etc)
