if you are going for a walk in countryside what can you do to prevent spreading something, especially if you dont know its there??
Am asking because i do spend alot of time walking in different areas.. and would hate to be one of the ones responsible

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth I would carry a small spray of an approved disinfectant type
One of the household sprays with an on-off nozzle
I cannot find a suitable disinfectant as these seem to be bulk
only.Isopropyl alchohol may be suitable
Chances are it will be blamed on Foxes or Badgers as the powers
that be flounder about looking for a scapegoat

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth Seeing some of the shots on TV of the affected field it looked a bit like Langham Lake where there is cattle grazing, close to Egham village + a public footpath .If it is this site it's managed by National Trust + is the best site in the London area for water plants with some rare water beetles.
Sad for everyone concerned. |

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth If it is National trust, they normaly supply buckets of disinfectant to walk through.
There is another thread on this started by stuart. I gave some links to Defras main FMD site.
On this is a link for all the publications. These publications suggest that their are risks of FMD being spread by all farm animals, vehicles, man (including in our throats ), This can obviously be continued further by suggesting all insects, birds, mammals etc.The list goes on.
After the last outbreak, Defra and the goverment had apparently made an investigation. The conclusion of this was that ithe most possible means of transportation of FMD at the time was the endless amounts of rain, floods etc. At the moment it seems Badgers and foxs are in the clear for the moment. Sure they will find some thing else soon though
They also say (in short)
Apart from not walking through the control zone, there is little more you can do other than stay out of the countryside. Where this is dissinfectant supplied, use it. use footpaths and do not walk through grazing land, keep dogs on leads. Always the same.
Just thought a possible idea would be to put plastic bags over your boots, and change them for every field.

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth i was thinking about the spread via other wildlife and got onto the lines that as far as i understand its only cloven hoofed animals that can CONTRACT it...so i was thinking...ok...the deer will get the blame.
But i guess any animal can "pass" on or carry the disease on their hoove's ( hoofs?), feet, claws, fur etc really?...so yeah..foxes, Badgers etc will get a rough time too. |

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth The precautions taken where I work include a pool of Citric Acid
for vehicle tyres but as yet I cannot find out the dilution
Plastic bags sound like a good idea but the life may be a little short

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth Only last week we had live calves leaving form Ipswich docks to go over the the continent for veal maybe the ban on movement should of lasted longer.
Thankfully there were lots of protesters, I know they didn't stop it but hopefully it will help, there is no need for this sort of thing to happen they can farm their own livestock
It is a mad world we live in at the moment with all this importing and exporting |

as I said earlier this carried in a spray for your boots may help lessen any risk

| | | Re: Foot and Mouth For those interested in the spread of foot and mouth disease, they might like to read some info by a gentlemen that spent 23 years experimenting with this disease in cattle. They can either go to the following link: Agriculture Library Index
and then go down the page to the following book and download it:
Howard, Sir Albert. Farming And Gardening For Health Or Disease. London: Faber and Faber, 1945.
Or for those that don't have the time or the inclination to read through the book, they can find an extract here that was originally published in What Doctors Don't Tell You. Animal Aid: FOOT AND MOUTH - A disease of intensive farming |

There are some cracking books on that site so it is worth perusing others once you have read that one. |

Not being able to go out for a short walk in the afternoons | Not being able to go out walking would be my idea of a nightmare. I walk at least four miles a day, every day and frequently more. One consolation for you: at least you now have some good reading to fill the time. |
