| | | Disapointing sites I caught the end of an item on local radio where they had been discussing the list of the 10 most disapointing sites in Britain. I can't find any mention of it on the web. Anyone know of it.
Apparently Stonehenge was the top disapointing site. I've been there and like it. It's a bit pricey, but it's a lovely area.
One other point mentioned, was that the Eiffel Tower was Europes most disapointing site!

of course you can also see it for free by either
a) turning your head as you whiz past on the 303
or
b) standing on the side of the 303
the trouble with b is that you stand a good chance of getting obsquatchalated by those practicing the a) technique

The best way is to pay and enter the site. It's the kind of thing that you ought to see once.
I wouldn't pay to see it again.
I'm just surprised that it's listed as the top most disapointing site in Britain .

| | | Re: Disapointing sites I have been there once, a few years ago and was very disapointed. We didnt have any money and found out you had to pay after driving a few hours to get there. It really felt like all the rich tourists, as most of them certainly looked that way, were able to visit the stones close up - British heritage, where as me and my mates who were skint at the time, and British, couldn't even get near them.
We climbed over the fence and viewed from afar so as not to get caught.
I understand that there needs to be some protection strategy as erosion is a big problem due to all the visitors, but surely there has to be a better way to protect the stones aside from charging high prices to view up close. |

I have only been on one occasion and had a really good day, the rest have been just good walks, with little to see.

I believe the visitors centre was redeveloped last year.

The rest of the area was nice though, and I spent a good few hours wandering around the woods and fields.

Keith. | I'm not a geordie but I used to work with one and he called the Angel of the North "an iron monstrosity", no idea if thats the opinion of all geordies though?
We're going to see Stonehenge on the way back from our hols and as members of English Heritage it's free We'll have a wander around those woods and fields you mentioned Za when we're there. |

| | | Re: Disapointing sites As to the Angel, most of us Geordies have a lot of affection for it. But I'm biased, as I think Anthony Gormley is Britain's best living artist (sorry, I'm not trying to hijack the thread, honestly ).
I found Stonehenge disappointing because in my mind, and from all the pictures I'd seen, I thought it would be huge. And it wasn't.
I find the list of the most popular interesting. Alnwick Castle??? It's quite a nice little castle, but I think Harry Potter may have had something to do with the recent popularity. |

The whole area looks good for wildlife.Have fun

Za | I understand what you mean. Unfortunately the site is not what it should be as it has been vandalised over the years. There was a TV program on earlier in the week, BBC2 I think? and they reconstructed what the original Stonehenge looked like. They used some lightweight materials that they engineered to look like stone and erected it in a field near to Stonehenge. Now that was impressive! and yes the area is good for wildlife. Cheers

I can't really remember it (I went when I was a kid, haven't been back since) |

Za | Stone'enge? Been there many times, and can remember the days when you could freely walk around in the stone circle. I suppose it must be a disappointment to many of the visitors these days, but I think you have to take into consideration who built it, and the technology they used.
As noted above, Avebury is not too far away, and you have access to all the stones free of charge, plus Silbury Hill is within walking distance: again, another impressive man-made feature.
