| | | Blackpool I've just watched a recording of Sundays 'Britains Favourite View'. It looks like I shall be adding some more views of the country to look out for when I plan my short breaks. There were some stunning shots.
But Blackpool ????
It's the best view were after - not the most popular holiday place !!

Richard | Lovely!
We try to get upto the lakes 5 or 6 times a year for three or four days at a time (It's never long enough) and I tend to have to work in Scotland quite a few times a year, in fact I am working in Scotland next week.
Although next week invloves work trips to Manchester, Cardiff, East Anglia and then 2 days in Glasgow and then somerset on the weekend for pleasure so I will be glad to not be sat in the drivers seat I think once we have arrived in Somerset!
I have not as yet been to the Highlands something that needs to be rectified. |

I have not as yet been to the Highlands something that needs to be rectified. | If you really do want some of the best views in the UK, then you really must be rectified and visit the Highlands.
I guess your "round Britain tour" next week will be mostly via M-ways .... not too many good views there .
I think my nomination for the "best M-way view in the UK" would be from the M6 as it passes the Bowland Fells in Lancashire .... or is it Cumbria? .... on the way to the Highlands anyway .

Richard | Cardiff isnt too bad as I tend to detour off the main track while travelling through Hereford.
Manchester - well enough said!
East Anglia - it is normally Norwich but not too sure this time - too flat for my tastes, the horizon isnt meant to look like that .
Glasgow - top end of M6 and M74 nice drive and of course a nice stop off on the way back at Killington Lake for a coffee overlooking the water.
My favourtie work trips though are to Devon where I stay at a little country house hotel right on the edge of Dartmoor just a little further up from Bovey Tracy- can't beat it - first thing in the morning up at Haytor. |

Don't forget Tebay and Shap.
I think Shap is the highest point of a motorway in the country. Very pretty views for a motorway.
The Tebay motorway services is a family run business. They used to be a farming family, now they employ 500 people in the local community. It's a pretty place , well worth a stop.
Keith.
Sorry - this reply was for Richew

Sorry - this reply was for Richew | Tebay is the Westmoorland Farm Sevices isn't it? With the farm local produce shop inside and the camp site. That is my stop off on the way up. Killington Lake on the way back. |

"Manchester - well enough said!" .... I agree, not great scenery but some excellent architecture around Old Trafford .... the Reds to win the PL title again this season .

Perhaps we've interpreted the meaning of 'Britains Favourite View' wrongly ?
We'll know next week if we see Big Ben as a contender!!

Well I didn't see the programme, shame really as I would maybe be able to see what all the fuss is about. Blackpool's not that bad!!! Is it?? I am 'Sandgrown' and have lived here all my life (except for 3 years at Uni in Cardiff) and well, I like it. There are loads of things to do and loads of nice places to visit - including areas of fantastic wildlife! If you know where to look. I admit there are some pretty scummy areas within the town, and I don't like some of the scum that the place attracts BUT I have been to many other towns and cities with equally scummy areas too. Whilst at Uni I visited loads of places with the sports teams and for example to quote a few of those mentioned in the thread:
Edniburgh - loved it, beautiful place and didn't see too much wrong
Glasgow - hated it, scummiest place in Britain that I have visited. Far scummier than Blackpool!
Cardiff - Lived there, loved it but does have places you would want to steer clear of!
Manchester - visit frequently, like it for a few things (including going to OT as well to see the mighty Reds) but definitely has some very dodgy areas (Moss Side - are you kidding me!?)
Well, as I said I didn't see the programme so don't know exactly what the problem is but cut us some slack we're not that bad, honest! |

So why didn't they show these nice places, with fantastic wildlife !!
The people weren't being judged.
I can't get my head around why we would want to look at Blackpool Tower rather than the Seven Sisters on the South Downs.
Blackpool and you Blackpudlians are OK ! But not as a contender for Britains favourite view.

I think Blackpool is a great view and a nostalgic one for many and I agree it’s especially lovely when the illuminations are on.
I think there are 61 views altogether so there will be all types of different 'views' to see and something for everyone I would expect.
Just because some people don't like them doesn't mean that others won't, I think we will all have a little bias to places where we live or go to or mean something to us.

| | | Re: Blackpool I agree with this. I think a lot of people have had fond memories of Blackpool, particularly from their youth and images of the 'Golden Mile', Tower and Illuminations are often symbols of nostalgia.
The programme sounds interesting and I'll look out for it next week. I'm sure there are many lovely views around the country, which if I'm honest I'm sure I'd prefer myself. However, the Tower is an engineering feat and can look imposing when lit up at night.
Tbh I know Blackpool can be pretty dour during the season and I stay clear of the town centre if I can but home is where the heart is and I had to attempt the honourable thing and defend our 'mostly' wonderful town
P.S. Please take all comments light-heartedly as they were intended! (Particularly those of you from Glasgow - see previous post! ) |

(Particularly those of you from Glasgow - see previous post! ) | That is the problem I guess places like Blackpool get slated because I guess most of us have only been down the main street. I haven't actually been to Blackpool for probably 16 years or so, my comment was really based around the fact that once you pass the Blackpool sign heading North the driving becomes much more pleasurable as the major cities and traffic routes are now behind you.
Mind now they are letting Laurence LLewelyn-Bowen loose on designing some of Blackpool's lighting extravaganzas who knows what will happen, maybe Blackpool tower will be given a makeover in cerise faux fur! |

| | | Re: Blackpool I shall be at Martin Mere on Sunday, but I shan't even consider a visit to Blackpool.
Now, If I were to be in Sussex, I would go out of my way to see the Seven Sisters.
The same applies to S.Wales, if I could get to that view on the Gower I would.
Perhaps this is the way to define a favourite view - would you go out of your way to see it !
Anyway! after Martin Mere I'm going to go out of my way to see the Lake District and whilst up there I shall go out of my way to visit Galloway!!
