I did see the trailer following this weeks "Natural World" and I think this is a "must see" programme for all seabird colony fans.
Sadly, I think this is a developing natural disaster.

I agree with you about a developing natural disaster and find the thought quite frightening and can fore see many species becomming Extinct

| | | Re: Saving Our Seabirds Thanks, Kym, I'll watch that. We've just come back from visiting the seabird colonies on the Farne Islands, and one of the wardens on Staples Island said that they are to some extent victims of their own success. Since the NT started managing the islands the bird colonies have increased in number, leading to "enrichment" of the soil from all the droppings (the smell takes some getting used to ). This has meant that the flora on the island has changed, with scurvy grass and broad leaved plants like docks now much more abundant and pushing out some of the other species like sea campion and thrift. The problem is that most of the now dominant plants disappear for half the year, leading to greater erosion of the soil and potential loss of habitat for the puffins. So they now have to try to do something about that. Just goes to show how hard it is to get conservation right. |

| | | Re: Saving Our Seabirds Well I have just finished watching the programme .... some excellent landscape and wildlife filming at many locations that I know well.
Seabirds and seabird colonies are just awesome and part of the UK's natural heritage. They deserve our support.
The programme's tale of the substantial decline in many seabirds due to overfishing and climate change left me thoroughly depressed.
However, the positive note left by Roy Dennis was that (a) seabirds are long-lived and capable of adapting to change and (b) we must give them a chance by proactive marine conservation measures.
WAB members .... please do follow Kayleigh's link to the RSPB marine campaign .... and sign the e-petition.
