| | | Re: Springwatch Everyone I speak to about spring watch says that Bill Oddie irritates the hell out of them. Personally he doesn't bother me (but I much prefer Kate!) but I don't watch the programme because I think they drag out about every ten minutes of watchable programme over half an hour. I'd rather watch the highlights at the end of the week. |

I don't mid Bill. He does talk a lot, but it doesnt bother me too much. But then again, I'm a simple person who will like anyone until I am absolutely convinced otherwise (once to my cost!)

Don't forget Springwatch Nightshift, tonight from 12.20am – badgers, owls and things that scurry through the night.

| | | Re: Springwatch Someone asked my eldest if he saw Springwatch. His reply: "The only way I will watch Bill Oddie is through the cross-hairs".
I tried it when it first started a few years back but found it, like 90%+ of the BBC's Science and nature output, to be patronising and dumbed-down to the point of unwatchability. Maybe it's improved since but from other comments on this thread it doesn't sound like it.
They need to get David Attenborough involved. He has consistently made excellent programs, accessible to a wide audience who have a limited knowledge of the subject, without being twee and patronising and anthropomorphising anything that moves.

Surely Bill knows they are on the incease and massively expanding their range? Yes they are less common than crows or rooks and more restricted in range but they're not exactly rare I don't think.... | Thu May 31st 2007 - at a site between Gloucester and the Forest of Dean: 254 Ravens counted flying into a roost. There are also some at Robinswood Hill Country Park, in what could be described as the "suburbs" of the City of Gloucester... I think at the very least WEO could have said that Ravens, although at one time more or less restricted to the upland areas and western fringes of Britain, are now spreading out just a bit... |

| | | Re: Springwatch Bill should know that ravens are elsewhere - after all in one of his own programmes he travelled to Liverpool to see them nesting on one of the churches there . . .
I've been seeing and hearing them from places like Billinge Hill, Wigan and Silverdale/Arnside area for several years now. They regularly fly over our caravan pitch at Milnthorpe calling.
Pauline
PS I'm still undecided about Bill - half of me thinks he could be a fun bloke to go birding with - the other half thinks he might be rude, obnoxious and a bit up his own end - I think this probably demonstrates his state of mind rather than mine - I feel that sometimes he will be ok and othertimes a bit over the top. . . If he was rude to me - I'd be rude back - and I bet I'd win!
PPS (second edit!) I'm that frame of mind where nature photography is concerned I will watch any footage no matter who is presenting it and how much I may dislike them - its the photography I'm interested in!!! |

| | | Re: Springwatch I was interested yesterday evening in that chap who had staked out a square metre of his garden and was carefully observing all the small things that turned up in it. I thought that might be a good project for some of us WAB gardeners, and have been considering which bit of the garden would be best to measure out mine in. Not that I need anything else to distract me from all the things I should be doing, but hey, what's life for... |

I would Love to spend a day with him. he really knows his stuff and his passion for wildlife comes across when he talks.
I missed last nights programme
But gather there were a few sad bits of news, will have to make sure i watch it tonight to catch up on "The Fox Diary" This is my favourite part of the show.

| | | Re: Springwatch Yes I find the cutting about and recapping a bit irritating too but it's a sign of the times I suppose. I will say my kids get bored with that aspect as well so perhaps a bit of a rethink is necessary.
Apart from that I loved the bit with the owls, especially when Bill suggested we could end up with one owl left and all the others inside it..........
That's obviously my sick mind truely exposed! |

| | | Re: Springwatch And I will admit to finding the wuvvy duvvy cutey wittle animals thing a bit nauseating too but at the end of the day, I think this programme has done a huge amount for the wildlife of this country and got so many people involved in ways they wouldn't have considered before. It's also an rare excuse for families to get round the telly and watch and learn at the same time.
So all power to you Springwatch and big round of applause to everyone who works away in the background for months to get it to us.
But a bit more on the humble blackbird please :-) |

| | | Re: Springwatch Hi there, I'm a bit of a newbie to this site, but I have very hungry birds in our garden and I would like to know,
can I feed them Cranberries?
I have a tub of them, and it would be a pity to waste them, I was thinking of mixing them up with some butter?
Thank you for reading this and hope you're all enjoying Springwatch as much as my tribe have! |

i agree about the footage of wild life but the inane comentary drives me bonkers, I normally resort to turning the sound off but this deprives me of the noises the animals make etc- I wish there was a red button function to turn the comtrary off but retain the background noise. (this would also be great for footie , rugby , and any other programme that involves a nonentity spouting ego enhancing drivel other otherwise exceptional footage)
also while kate is a pretty girl , and there are (alledgedly) those that find bill and simon attractive , why cant they keep the flipping camera on the wildlife , i want to watch the wildlife - not watch bill-kate-si watching it !

| | | Re: Springwatch How to make watching Bill Oddie bearable.
Everyone has a guess (if you are watching with your family/friends) as to how many times the poison twittering little get, sticks his tongue out of the side of his mouth.
If you don't know what I mean, just watch him....
Any guess under a dozen or so will be WAYYY short of the mark!
And the nearest to the mark receives a suitable prize...
