| | | Re: Tree ID please Hi Bombus Bombus, almost sure your tree is Horse Chestnut - Aesculus hippocastanum. The buds that you have shown are commonly called sticky buds due to the fact that they have a sticky sap on them. This is the tree that produces conkers.

Roger | I could be wrong but it doesn't look like Horse Chestnut to me. Possibly poplar but its difficult to tell with a half open bud. A closed bud or a leaf is easier.

| | | Re: Tree ID please I'd plump for poplar also because of the bark pattern and at the bottom of the pic of the buds there appears to be an unopened or less opened bud which although blurry looks more like poplar to me.

| | | Re: Tree ID please Checked my photos but ufortunately most of my tree photos were lost in a pc death. I have some of horse chestnut buds (which it definitely isn't) but not poplar so that remains just my best guess.
Sorry, Ashe
PS - just noticed the buds in the photo are alternate whereas horse chestnut are opposite. |

| | | Re: Tree ID please If it was a poplar then lots of catkins would be seen on the higher branches. Bark does look like poplar and if the opening leaves are on a vertical twig coming up from the base of the tree as a sucker, then that would also suggest a poplar. What can be seen of the emerging leaf is consistent with poplar too. Having said all that - I'm probably way of target! |

| | | Re: Tree ID please Thanks for your views wabs i reckon poplar as well now, would that be white poplar.I suppose it would have helped if i got a picture of the whole tree and a leaf photo would clinch put it beyond doubt. Bombus Bombus. |

| | | Re: Tree ID please Could be poplar but which Populus? You say there are several so probably not black poplar. Were these tall thin trees - as in a planting of Lombardy poplar?
Sorry, I see that you're suggesting white poplar - probably the best guess *if* it is poplar ....
