| | | Tree growing in guttering Came across this conifer growing in the guttering of an old barn a couple of weeks ago.
It is at present around two feet high, so I'm guessing it's at least two years old? What type of conifer is it please? |

| | | Re: Tree growing in guttering It's a pine, maybe six or so years old. Difficult to say what species, possibly Scots or Lodgepole.
*possibly a bit too spreading for Lodgepole but it is growing in an unusual environment!

Yes, a pine but it would be interesting to know what all the other (deciduous) timber is - birch is probably the most common recruit in this habitat. |

| | | Re: Tree growing in guttering there is a very old oak tree at the top of our road .in the large fork there is an elder tree growing .it has been there at least two years .and although not very large seems to be thriving. i often wonder as i go past if it will cause any damage to the beautiful old oak. it's roots ect.growing into the tree itself. ?

I think the deciduous timber on the gutter is dead Ivy. There is a bit of live Ivy there and perhaps a long Bramble shoot. |

Ivy, of course, deposits all sorts of stuff that acts as rooting compost for passing seeds! |

| | | Re: Tree growing in guttering Yes, Woodman, you are quite correct it is dead ivy, which is probably what is preventing the guttering from falling down!
How far would the roots of the pine be extending along the guttering, do you think? Are pines shallow-rooted anyway? |

| | | Re: Tree growing in guttering Yeah! pines are not very deep rooted but you can`t do any harm by pulling it up as it will die anyway when the gutter falls off.
