Sorry not a Birch - looks like a wild cherry Prunus avium, those 2 red glands on the leaf petiole or leaf stalk or characteristic.

There's also a characteristic smell to Prunus avium if you rub the leaves. |

It could well be a Birch, but it's not one of our two native species. Some of the ornimental vars. have similar leaves, coud be one of those.
Can you post a pic. of the whole tree, the bark and a catkin,( if it has any)?

Cherry for me, Zooming in I think I can just make out some lenticular lines on the upper bark...

I agree with John, it has all the characteristics of a Cherry, (but none of a Birch).
