| | | Tree identity? plum? Hi everyone, just wondering if someone could help me ID our fruit tree, we've just moved in and really dont know much about fruit trees. We'd like to know what the fruit is and what we can do with it (eating, jam etc?) & when we should pick it. Also its grown pretty out of control so need to know the best way/time to trim it. I've uploaded some photos which I'll attach. The leaves are 2 to 3 inches long- some green some purple. The fruit is about 1 to 2 inches in length & diameter.
Thanks so much in advance.

They are very nice eaten off the tree as well.

| | | Re: Tree identity? plum? Hi Leanne, welcome to WAB.
Your plum looks similar to a variety called 'The Czar'. Commonly planted as a pollinator for other plums.
Whatever variety it is, it will be fine for eating or cooking.
Pruning should only be done to remove dead or broken branches. Do this in early spring, (not in the winter), or early summer on a dry day.
Looks like you have a good crop.

| | | Re: Tree identity? plum? Welcome and hope you enjoy the plums.Only got a tree in a pot on the patio. Produced 10 plums and brought them in for for a puff pastry plum pie before the birds get at them.

How long do you advise we leave them before picking? They r quite hard still so not sure when they would be ripe enough to eat?

Lea x | If they feel at all soft between the fingers they will probably be almost ripe. So it's simply a case of 'try it and see'. Some plums varieties can taste good before they become too soft, yours are looking almost ripe. So I'd certainly try a couple, you'll know when they are ready to eat.
If you are thinking of cooking some, it's often best not to use the over-ripe ones as they will turn to a 'mush'.
Do let us know what they taste like.

| | | Re: Tree identity? plum? Sometimes when you know a fruit, it "smells right", as Dorts says firmer for cooking and you can always add a little sugar.
