Horse chestnuts dropping conkers-to-be query

This year I'm seeing lots of these tiny, shed, would-be conkers on the ground - and I'm wondering if they're usual, and I've never noticed before, or it's because of the high winds we've been having, or because of the unending drought (we're on the south coast and desperate for rain), or because of something else?!

There are always some but they be being increased by the drought.
The tree will try to adjust its crop to suit conditions thus ensuring that there are enough reserves to ripen what fruit are left into viable seed.
Topfruit do this as well. It is called the "June Drop"
