| | | growth on baby oak tree leaves Hi, I've been growing a baby oak for a few years now, it's now 2 feet high. I've just discovered that there are strange little balls attached to some of the leaves. I only noticed this as some of the leaves look liked they had a small red blotch on the top of the leaf, and turning the leaf over, appears a little greenish ball. Is this misletoe growth? Do I simply remove the "infected" leaves.
Please advise
thanks

Don't worry. It's just a gall. This is caused by a wasp which interferes with the growth hormones of the tree and causes these malformations. Inside will be a wasp larva which will eventually bore out. It's a seasonal and harmless phenomenum. The one you have looks like oak apple gall.
All the best

| | | Re: growth on baby oak tree leaves Yes this is a gall caused by a gall wasp. Most likely the cherry gall, Cynips quercusfolii, which grows on the underside of leaves. The Oak Apple (Biorhiza pallida) is rather larger and forms on a bud. It has a fairly spongy appearance at this time of year.
A 30 year old oak in the garden has about 10 different types of galls and even some of the saplings get around 5 over the year (mainly on the leaves). |

I have just come across this gall which looks similar to yours. I know very little about galls but thought it worth looking at. |

It also seems quite large for this stage of the year. |

| | | Re: growth on baby oak tree leaves Yeah, Pea gall to me. I thought that Cherry Galls develop on the flowers of oak.
Does anyone else marvel at the way that the wasp eggs carry DNA that can overlay the host DNA to produce Galls that are highly evolved entities in themselves.
I have always struggled to work out how these extremely complex systems could evolve. Any suggestions?
