First leaf dates

just been looking at the woodland survey for the first dates of things appearing, and noticed the field maple dates are all around march for first leaf. however, i'm sure i saw some field maple leaves coming out on the 28th jan this year. i thought it was early, but it certainly was new leaf, not just remnants from last year....

anyone seen this or know anything about leaves coming early? was i just going a bit mad ???

None of the Field Maples near me in west London are showing any leaf yet.

Hello Beard,

I'm currently studying the phenology of trees in the SW England, and our field Maples are still not in leaf and we are mid March and further south than you. May I ask where your field maple was? Was it close to a street light by any chance as they give off the same light spectrum as sun light.
