| | | What tree have I got? Today I went into my local Homebase to get my free tree for the tree o clock scheme, I found a trolley with the trees on shelves and the relevent colour coded stickers stuck on each shelf but not on the trees themselves. I wanted a silver birch but not sure I have got one! as the trees could have been moved about by people. I could identify the hawthorn as they have the thorns and also the cherry by the distinctive bark but that's as far as I could go, there was only two left of this one and it was on the purple shelf where the silver birch should be so I'll do my best to describe it! the bark is a shade of green with visible silver bumps all over it and has green buds at regular spacing across the stem, it's straight and upright and had some fine hairs visible on part of the stem, does this describe a silver birch whip? I can take a photo tommorrow if it would help. |

P.s the location of the tree has changed since I took the first pic as I feel it didn't have enough space where I put it originally |

| | | Re: What tree have I got? A hazel it appears to be, but i wont gaurantee this as those leaves could be juvenile foliage of birch, however the stem does match hazel too.
a fine shrubby tree that will be as broad as it is tall, though does coppice very well indeed.
a birch is one of the most suitable trees for a small garden in fact, contrary to an earlier post, they are short lived however, but last a human lifetime. about 70 years.
