| | | spruce cone for id please can anyone identify this cone ? , there was just one tree at the edge of a mainly beech wood, not knowing much (if anything) about trees i found this one different from the usual conifers in the area,
having searched for clues on the id, i have narrowed it down to being some species of spruce, but could well be wrong
judging from pictures i have been able to find on the web, white spruce- picea glauca, seems close, but none seem to have those odd looking pieces between the scales of the cone,
any suggestions very welcome
thanks,

acting on your suggestion, i did a search on the web, and wikipedia came up with an 100% match for it , the foliage also matches the piece i have (which i forgot to include with the picture),
pardon the pun, but it appears i was barking up the wrong tree with my thoughts on it being a Spruce tree,
many thanks,

knowing very little about trees, especially conifers, i thought it was spruce, as another wood i visit has some sitka spruce planted there (i only know they are sitka spruce because there is a large picture sign in the wood showing what trees are planted there) and the foliage and cones were similar(although the sitka cones were larger)
and to my limited eyes, one conifer looks much like another at the moment, a fact i hope to improve on in the future

I believe a Douglas Fir is also the current tallest tree in Britain, anyone like to confirm or deny please. ?
