Please explain this: Small vegetation grows on the skin of trees

It looks pretty colourful, so i took a few shots and close-ups. But no idea about why and what is going on that small plants (mm in size) grow on the skin of trees. Please explain.

They are Lichens oxford patient

Yes, its still tree related though Oxford patient,I just thought that you would have better chance with help on these at the lichen sub-forum,glad to see you found that o.k

you may yet get answers in both of the forums though
