orchard trees

I'm hoping to participate in some orchard survey work. I know my cooking apple from my victoria plum but I'll need to know more. Are there any good books or anything to help identify old varieties of fruit trees? Cheers.

Check out brogdale nurseries in kent who have the national (or at least apple) collection. they have a website

P.S. 21st of october is national apple day!

Look out for The Plums of England by H V Taylor and The Apples of England (same author) Published in 1949. Don't cover every variety, but could be a great help. Nice colour photographs of many varieties.
