what tree / shrub please

Looks very like Japanese Knotweed to me.

Russian vine (a.k.a Mile-a-minute), Fallopia baldschuanica A close relative of Japanese knotweed, but not so invasive.

I agree that it is Japanese Knotweed.

Russian Vine is a climber with much smaller leaves

I have mile-a-minute and although flowers look similar the leaves are much much smaller, looks like the dreaded knotweed to me

P.S Mile-a-minute also a pain wish it wasn't in my garden

thanks for your id's .Does russian vine sometimes cover whole trees ? Ive seen a similar flower covering 2 large fir trees,just wondered if it may be russian vine

Yes!

Its covering two of my dying fir trees!

If you want to get rid of it ............ cut down and cover fresh end
of trunk with ploythen bag.

Make a small hole in the bag and spray roundup liberally on the fresh cut.
Seal with Duck tape.
Reapeat daily for one week.

Killed mine when it was invading the house - given advice from a forester!

Possibly better to wait until the spring now though?

At Sand Point, on the Somerset coast, it's covered maybe 50 square yards of bramble hedge and hawthorn bushes; it makes a magnificent sight when it's in flower
