cob nuts or hazelnuts ?

right - we've got one or the other growing in our garden (on the kent/sussex border, so real cob nut country), but how do we tell the difference between one and t'other - are there any visual give-aways, or do I have to wait until the nuts are ready and go by taste alone ?

...and before the purists crucify me, i should add the rider "kentish cob nuts or any other sort of hazelnut" - i know that cobs are hazelnuts - it's finding out if they're a cultivated variety or a "wild" type that I'm after !

Hi Herman, I have a large Kent Cob bush/tree growing in my garden, the cob nut is a fair bit larger than the usual Hazelnut tree nuts you find growing in the wild, also they are a slightly diferent shape, slightly elongated with a pointed end.

The taste is different as well.
