Second one is a Apple variety.
Cheers,
Adam

No. 2 is a Malus sp and, looking at it, I'd say it was most likely Common Apple (Malus domestica) |

| | Re: 2 trees for I.D. Thanks for this thread, I've been trying to identify #1 for the last hour or so, I recently lent my trees book to a neighbour who is away on hols.
I was hoping it was service/checker then recognised the leaves are wrong...
Looks the same to me, edible berries possibly? |

Allegedly Swedish Whitebeam berries are sweet-tasting, though I've never sampled them myself. Chequer berries from Wild Service trees are slightly softer as well as being sweet: I understand they're used in all kinds of foods including cakes, muesli , chocolate bars and alcoholic drinks. There's a recipe for cake at Ramblings of a Naturalist: Cake with wild service berries if you want to experiment with your Swedish Whitebeam berries! Maybe if you soak the berries overnight in fruit juice or rum it will make them a bit softer and nicer.
If it was me I'd leave the Whitebeam berries for the birds. Winter thrushes like Fieldfare and Redwing love them! |

| | | Re: 2 trees for I.D. Cheers Monkey Orchid,
The berries didn't look that special in the end I decided againsst using them for anything and stuck to the local blackerries instead ;-) | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
