| | | Is this an elm? I have spent hours trying to identify this tree. I origanelly thought it might be a hornbeam, but then came to the conclusion it was en elm. However it doesn't seem to have a distinctly asymetric base at the bottom of the leaf. Any help with deciding if this is an elm and what species of elm would be very helpfull,
Thanks
Aimee
p.s. this tree is found in england |

| | | Re: Is this an elm? Your all right I think it might be a Hornbeam, this was my original thought. However what put me off this was because of this tree near by which I also thought was a hornbeam, as shown in the picture below, and although the leaves are very similar they have distinct differences. This leaf has shallower veins, darker colour, rougher surface and a darker colour. Is this a hornbeam as well? |

| | | Re: Is this an elm? My feeling is, and I could be wrong, that your latest picture is still a hornbeam leaf. If it is an elm, then the base of the leaf blade where it meets the petiole should be distinctly longer on one side compared to the other. But your picture doesn't show the base of the leaf so it is difficult to be sure.
