Re: tree for id please

I agree. Have you thought of putting it on the Ancient Tree Hunt website (or maybe it's already on there)? It looks like a tree that should be recorded!

Re: tree for id please

hi tigger / aeshna .Can i ask what makes this one look very old ? I dont want to report something that isnt suitable but i will gladly register the tree if its ancient. I think its criminal how these lovely trees are cut down without a thought. These trees are in a very small wood on a lane/field edge. The floor of the wood is covered in pendulous sedge. Is it worth measuring the circumference of the tree ? . It may not be reported as the wood is very damp and overgrown and the trees are at the rear edge.

Re: tree for id please

I'm a Volunteer ATH Tree Verifier. Don't worry about it not being suitable. Just "measure it and add it" is my advice. Although it's called the Ancient Tree Hunt we are trying to find out about "all" large old trees - and you can see from your picture that your tree is larger than "normal".

Get a long tape measure - take a friend (as it's easier with two of you) and measure the girth of the tree at 1.5m from the ground (in metres and cms). Then you can add it to the records on the ATH. However, you must make sure you have permission to go onto the land if it is private.

Believe me it's addictive. Now I can't go anywhere without my tape measure!

Good luck

Jane

Re: tree for id please

I'm more inclined to Hornbeam - look at the higher branches
which seem to have the characteristic shapes.

Re: tree for id please

Could be Hobjob. Best idea is get a leaf from the tree to ID it Naturenutz. Very hard to tell from a photo as it's all out of proportion. If you can photograph the leaf and put it on here, all the better.

Totally agree Hobjob. Looks like Hornbeam to me because of the "convoluted" trunk, Hornbeams tend to look more ancient than Beech of similar size because of that.

All the best
