| | | Handkerchief Tree at Kenwood. Well worth visiting Kenwood to see. Should still be OK next weekend (16th May)

| | | Re: Handkerchief Tree at Kenwood. Ah rats, was hoping to go and see one of these in Richmond Park but I've got too much work on until early June. Any chance the hankies will still be about then? |

| | | Re: Handkerchief Tree at Kenwood. The one at Hidcote Manor Garden (NT) in Gloucestershire is already well past its best with the bracts turning brown...
Went to see it yesterday.

The one at Kenwood is huge, and as they were only introduced into Europe in 1904, I guess it must be amongst the oldest in the U.K.

These are very striking trees when in flower, with all those big white bracts* but would probably go unnoticed for most of the year! You will find them in many arboreta/collections: I know there is a large specimen in Batsford Arboretum in Gloucestershire, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall have one, too.
*Although I did overhear a lady at Hidcote the other day explaining carefully to her companions how they were flowers but with two petals of different sizes!

| | | Re: Handkerchief Tree at Kenwood. There's a good example of one at Minterne Gardens in mid Dorset. Exactly a year ago today it was showing well, but my efforts to take a picture left a great deal to be desired! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
