| | | Tree and hedge planting Out for a walk near the village yesterday, we noticed a number of areas fenced off at the margins of fields. A bit further on, we met a man planting young trees and had a chat with him. He had another 2000 trees to plant yesterday - 21 varieties including Scots pine, Aspen, Rowan, holly, blackthorn etc...
He had already completed 1 1/2 miles of hedge and the fenced areas were for even more trees.
He spoke cynically of government policy which had paid farmers to rip up hedges, and now was giving grants to re-plant them! Looking at his handy work, our garden hedge of 200 plants (100 beech+ 10 other varities) looked a bit mean, so when the time comes, I think we want another 100. |

They were paid to make their farms as efficient as possible to increase yields but then food mountains developed, so they downgraded CAP and now are going the opposite way and paying them for set aside schemes and hedge planting as you have said. I
I came across young conifers surrounded by an electric fence and I wondered what was going on.
